This past week I had the opportunity to read this book and meet the author. It is a nonfiction psychological thriller told in first person by the author Americus Dotter. As a mother and wife, it seemed that Americus had the perfect life. Yes there were the every day struggles that all of us have......but for the most part, she was living part of the American dream. Successful parents, siblings and friends, a successful husband and children. She was a human egg donor, trying to help couples become parents that couldn't. Yes there was compensation, and there was even satisfaction knowing that she had made a difference for a couple. But all the happiness was shattered when Americus bought a car that was listed on Craigslist.This is her personal journey to hell and back as she battles forces that take her to the edge of death. It is her struggle with Spiritual Warfare, and her conscience. It is "A Rude Awakening" for her as she comes to grip with that fact that not all of her ovum are being used in a manner consistent with her desires. Though there are forces of evil running rampant on this earth..........if we listen hard, there is still that one voice, that somehow will trumpet louder than all of the rest.
Today as a Christian, this journey has given Americus a new lease on life, a clear direction in where she is headed and the realization that we are constantly fighting spiritual battles. This story is very compelling. Once I started reading I did not stop until I was done. I really felt for the author while reading this book and we need to be reminded that stuff like she wrote can and does happen.
Wow, truth is stranger than fiction. I'm just left at the end wanting the author to tie it all together, and make it more clear what REALLY happened. Then again, perhaps that is the thing that is so maddening about going mad. Reality and the subconscience are blurred. What an accomplishment for the author to write such a riveting recount while still struggling to recover from the effects of massive hormone imbalances, a guilty conscience, and a broken heart.
Very well written....couldn't put it down. It was interesting & informative, but also heartbreaking & gut wrenching at times. Really made me think & question many things in my own life in regards to fertility & treatments I have been given....soulfully written account of the author's experiences. Great book...I highly recommend!
Wow! What more can I say! This story will rock you're socks off with the things you will learn about our society and medical field. Things that aren't told by the experts but told her by a true calculating experience!! A must read for everyone!!! Congratulations Americus on putting you're story out there for others to know and hopefully not experience themselves!! Americus Dotter, whose wry pen name serves as political comment, describes her evolution from altruistically inclined egg donor to awareness raising gadfly illuminating the links between the fertility treatment and stem cell research industries. And all it took was a simple psychotic break.
The story begins with Americus (Amy) purchasing a car she found on Craigslist. Her initial discomfort upon meeting the owner, coupled with not having shared her intentions with her husband, builds tension from the start. Several short chapters, perhaps a few too many, reveal Amy's instincts about the owner to be accurate. The circumstances following the car sale break wide open cracks in Amy's psyche that weren't previously apparent.
"Now I really am crazy, and the word is out."
Amy is taken by ambulance to the hospital when her husband cannot prevent her from sobbing uncontrollably one evening, having become increasingly paranoid that her computer and phone is being monitored in connection with a criminal investigation.
Dotter guides us through her experience of psychiatric treatment on parallel levels. Though she is medicated and lethargic much of the time, she remains self-aware enough to record what she perceives to be happening to her and trying to understand why. We are with her observing this young mother's gauzy, confused existence in which voices and visions appear and retreat. Yet she remains able to recall in exquisite detail the colors, sounds, feelings - including some brief sexuality - occurring within her.
As she eventually emerges back into the real world, she inevitably seeks to understand what she's been through and how it happened. Her exploration traces her path as an egg donor working with fertility treatment programs to help women conceive to an understanding that not all harvested eggs are used for that purpose. Why extract 30 eggs when 6-8 are sufficient?
Dotter describes the impact on the female body as it's prepped for egg extraction including the little discussed, or even acknowledged, harmful effects on a woman's psychological health. That includes the risk of postpartum psychosis.
"That just sounds nasty. I am not just crazy. Now I am a psycho."

Very thought provoking and a little too close to home. As a former psych patient and someone recovered naturally from bipolar, I related to the story on many levels that many of us may be just one stressful event away from a diagnosis, I related as a mom, and I also related on the spiritual journey aspect. Are all psychotic events due to mental illness, or is there a thinning of the metaphysical veil opening to a spirit world that many of us have had glimpses of? A great read, entertaining and thought provoking. An ethical, moral, and spiritually insightful book.
